La Fontana Antica — Listen in English

Try turning on the water in this fountain. Feel the fresh, cool stream pour into your hands—just as it did 300 years ago, into the hands of the very first guests of Lazure, or as it was known then, the Lazaret.

Look closely at the words carved into the stone. This fountain was installed in 1741, yet we believe an even older fountain was here before that. Fresh water has been essential since construction began in 1729. The water you feel today flows from a natural spring on the hill near the Savina Monastery. It travels through tons of rock before emerging into daylight right here, sparkling near the seashore.

Originally, this fountain sat in an open courtyard at the center of the architectural complex. Before the renovation transformed Lazure into a hotel, you would be standing in a large, open courtyard with views of several buildings and the chapel (which you can still visit).

The complex once had four courtyards, and we’ve kept two open so you can enjoy a cup of coffee in the fresh air and pleasant weather.
