Chapel of St. Rocco — Listen in English

If you feel the urge to speak softly here, you’re not alone—this is a sacred space. Welcome to the Chapel of St. Rocco. In the Catholic tradition, St. Rocco is revered as the patron saint of health and a protector against the plague.

The history of Lazure began in the 18th century when the Venetians, who controlled Herceg Novi, built a lazaret near the town to serve as both a customs house and quarantine zone. The chapel was dedicated to St. Rocco, asking for his protection over the city from diseases that could be carried by trade caravans passing through.

The interior paintings have been carefully reconstructed to restore the chapel’s solemn beauty, just as it appeared nearly three centuries ago. Today, it’s considered one of the most intriguing sights in Herceg Novi.

If you’d like to explore more of the city’s history, our reception staff would be delighted to help you arrange a tour.
