Marina’s Past — Listen in English

Imagine it’s the middle of the 18th century. Venetian ships loaded with precious goods—cheeses, painted pottery, and other treasures—enter the Boka Bay. The first port they reach is Herceg Novi, or as the Venetians called it, Castel Nuovo—specifically, the Lazaret in Meljine. Here, ships must receive permission to offload their cargo or continue further. At this bustling checkpoint, local traders offer Balkan goods like wheat, beeswax, salt, fish, and wool. To support this trade, the lazaret needed a large, well-equipped harbor.

Though maritime trade isn’t the focus in Boka today, the love of sailing remains strong. In Herceg Novi, nearly everyone has a story or tip about sailing. Locals can tell you about the bay’s treacherous currents and which winds to avoid. Many trained at the city’s seamanship schools, with the oldest opening back in the mid-19th century.

Keeping this seafaring tradition alive, Lazure now boasts a modern marina and yacht club. Today, our harbor welcomes both professional yachtsmen and those who simply love the sea views.

If you’re inspired to explore Montenegro’s coastline from the water, just stop by reception, and we’ll be happy to help you arrange a yacht trip.
